From Design to Prototype: Internship at JNWSFL Builds Advanced Manufacturing Skills

sonam chokiThree Mechanical Engineering students- Tenzin Wangda, Tenzin Wangchuk, and Sonam Choki; successfully completed a three-month On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super Fab Lab (JNWSFL), operating under the InnoTech Department of Druk Holding and Investments (DHI).

The internship provided intensive exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies, digital fabrication, and engineering design practices. Guided by a team of experienced mentors and specialists, the trainees worked with cutting-edge tools including 3D printing systems, CNC machining equipment, digital fabrication platforms, and electronics prototyping tools. A key highlight of the training was their contribution to the development of an AI-based Sorting Machine, designed for automated visual inspection of manufactured parts. The students participated in research, CAD modelling, prototype development, and system testing, using professional software such as Fusion 360 and SolidWorks while producing working prototypes through modern additive manufacturing techniques.

They also supported client-based fabrication tasks, gaining valuable insight into real-world engineering workflows.

The department commends the students for their dedication, initiative, and technical curiosity, which enabled them to benefit fully from this highly practical learning environment. The experience reflects the department’s ongoing emphasis on hands-on learning, emerging technologies, and industry engagement.

The Mechanical Engineering Department also expresses sincere appreciation to the JNWSFL team and mentors for their guidance and for providing students with meaningful exposure to advanced engineering innovation.
